If you’re planning a trip to China, you’ve definitely heard of these two names: the wondrous peaks of Zhangjiajie and the water of Jiuzhaigou. But what’s the difference between them? Who is better for you? As a backpacker who has been to both places 3 times, I tell you the real experience in big words.
Who is suitable to visit Zhangjiajie?
It is suitable for you if:
- Like climbing and adventure: Zhangjiajie’s glass stacks and Tianmen Mountain’s 99 bends will give you an adrenaline rush.
- Want to take the same style of Avatar photos: the movie “Avatar” set of the Qiankun column is here, a shot are sci-fi blockbusters.
- Students with limited budgets: Zhangjiajie’s overall spending is lower than Jiuzhaigou’s (entrance fee is about $35, while Jiuzhaigou’s peak season is $44).
- Commuters with tight schedule: 2 hours direct from Changsha by high-speed rail, suitable for short weekend trips.
Not for you, if:
- Hate queuing: the cable car can take up to 2 hours in peak season.
- Physical fitness is poor: the scenic spot has many steps, and the average daily step count is 20,000+.
Who is suitable for touring Jiuzhaigou?
It is suitable for you if
- Obsessed with the “color of the water ”: the waters of the Five Flowers Sea and the Five Color Pool are like an overturned palette, and I’ve seen four shades of blue at the same time.
- Want to experience Tibetan culture: drink ghee tea, see Tibetan songs and dances, more ethnic flavor than Zhangjiajie.
- Bring the old man and child: scenic area full sightseeing bus transportation, trestle flat without pressure.
- Pursuit of “four seasons of different scenes ”: autumn color forest with snowy mountains, winter blue ice waterfalls, every time you go like open blind box.
The actual fact is that the actual actual actuality is not really a good idea.
- Afraid of plateau reaction: 3000 meters above sea level, it is recommended to bring chocolate to prevent high reflex.
- Hate the crowd: the National Day tourist density is comparable to New York Times Square.
Who is suitable for two attractions together?
Recommend you try if:
- Have more than 10 days long vacation: Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou (5 hours drive) → Chongqing → Zhangjiajie (5 hours by high-speed rail), play in tandem more efficiently.
- Photography enthusiasts: morning shot Zhangjiajie sea of clouds, afternoon shot Jiuzhaigou reflection, circle of friends directly sealed God.
- Want to experience “China’s landscape collection ”: Zhangjiajie’s mountains + Jiuzhaigou’s water = textbook level natural landscape.
Discouragement reason:
- Double the cost: at least $600 for double scenic area tickets + transportation.
- Easy aesthetic fatigue: may be numb after seeing mountains and water for a week in a row.
Comparison of popularity
- International Influence: Jiuzhaigou is better than others, and is recognized by National Geographic as one of the “50 places you must visit in your lifetime”.
- Number of tourists: Zhangjiajie receives 8 times more tourists than Jiuzhaigou (61.43 million vs. 7.2 million), but 80% of them are domestic tourists.
- King of Movie Bandwagon: Zhangjiajie got out of the ring with Avatar, Jiuzhaigou has the classic shot of Pearl Beach Falls from Journey to the West.

- “The owner of the B&B helps plan the route, save your heart!”
Spitting Points:
- “Yuanjiajie and Huangshizhai scenery is too similar, there is no need to go to both.”
Summary: How to choose without regret?
- Chose Zhangjiajie: limited budget/love excitement/want to take sci-fi photos
- Chose Jiuzhaigou: traveling with family/ obsessed with photography/ want to experience Tibetan culture
- Adults don’t make a choice: go to both if you have 2 weeks vacation + $1000 budget!
Lastly, a word of advice: Don’t believe in the “best season” argument! I’ve seen the sea of clouds after a rainstorm in Zhangjiajie, and met blue ice on a snowy day in Jiuzhaigou. The best part of traveling is always the surprises.
