In the early autumn, I finally embarked on my long-awaited journey to Jiuzhaigou. Having heard the saying “Once you’ve been to Jiuzhaigou, you need never look at water again,” my heart was filled with endless anticipation for this fairy tale-like world. With the opening of the high-speed railway connecting Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, my trip to Jiuzhaigou became even more convenient.
Upon arrival, I was mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of Jiuzhaigou in early autumn. Sometimes it was shrouded in misty rain and clouds, while at other times, it was bathed in sunshine, displaying a splendid array of colors. Located in the northwest of Sichuan Province, within the Minshan Mountains in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Jiuzhaigou derived its name from the nine Tibetan villages (Shuzheng, Zechawa, Heijiao, Heye, Panya, Yala, Jianpan, Rexi, and Guodu) within the scenic area, also known as the “Nine Herbal Villages.” These nine villages have been inhabited by Tibetan people for generations.
The 114 lakes, or “haizis,” of various sizes, each had their unique charm, much like women of different personalities and temperaments. Changhai, the highest and largest lake, exemplified elegance and grandeur, perched atop the Chawaha Valley at an altitude of 3,100 meters. The One-Armed Old Man Cypress stood guard beside Changhai, perhaps guarding a legendary love story between them. Wucai Pool, the smallest yet most vibrant of all the haizis, sparkled like a sapphire embedded in the forest, its blue hue becoming even more dazzling under the sunlight. Arrow Bamboo Lake resembled a deep green mirror, reflecting the silhouettes of mountains and trees, presenting the beauty of Jiuzhaigou in its unique way.
The waterfalls of Jiuzhaigou were another highlight, showcasing the dynamic side of this fairy tale world. Pearl Beach Falls, the filming location for the 1986 TV series “Journey to the West,” was the largest waterfall, exuding a magnificent presence. Shuzheng Falls flowed down from the forest like a string of white pearl necklaces hanging on the treetops, scattering instantly and converging into a silver ribbon that tumbled down, regaining its tranquility after passing through the jungle and stone beaches.
During the National Day holiday, Jiuzhaigou was bustling with visitors, with the official website showing that the estimated daily number of visitors exceeded 40,000. To avoid the crowds, I chose to stay at Ganhai Forest Mountain Residence, located 20 kilometers from the entrance of the valley. Fortunately, it proved to be a wise decision. Nestled in the mountains, the hotel was surrounded by green hills, providing a relaxing atmosphere. Moreover, guests could enjoy free access to the nearby Aihai scenic area, as the hotel’s owner managed the entire scenic area.
Aihai, though not large, was charming due to its serene environment and scenic beauty, perfect for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities. Sitting on the plank path, gazing at the distant mountains, looking up at the blue sky under the prayer flags, and interacting with alpacas on the grass, all troubles seemed to dissipate at this moment. Perhaps this was the meaning of travel.
In conclusion, my journey to Jiuzhaigou was nothing short of magical. From the colorful haizis to the magnificent waterfalls, and the peaceful Aihai scenic area, every moment was etched in my memory as an unforgettable experience. Jiuzhaigou truly is a colorful paradise on earth.
