Historical Background
The Lishui River has been used by humans since the Neolithic Age in Zhangjiajie.
Once part of Qianzhong Prefecture under the Qin Dynasty, it then belonged to Wu and Chu throughout the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.
Zhangjiajie became part of Li and Liyang Prefectures during the Tang Dynasty.
After several administrative changes, it became a prefecture-level city in 1988 and Zhangjiajie in 1994.
